A good headshot is mostly small things done right. The camera sees more than your eye does in the mirror. A stray hair, a twisted collar, a smudge on your glasses. None of it is hard to fix, but it’s easy to miss when you’re focused on your expression. Here’s what we watch for during a session, and what you can square away before you sit down.
The little things the lens picks up
Hair
Flyaways catch the light and read as messy. A fresh cut or a blowout a day or two before helps; bring a brush for touch-ups between frames.
Skin & shine
Lights pick up shine on the forehead and nose. A little hydration beforehand and a quick matte powder on set keep skin even, not glossy.
Eyes & glasses
Tired eyes show, so come rested. If you wear glasses, clean the lenses. Smudges and glare are the most common thing we’re asked to retouch.
Collar & tie
Collar points flat, knot centered in the V, nothing twisted at the back of the neck. Tie tips here if you need them.
Clothing
Lint, wrinkles, and stray tags all show up close. Press what you bring, run a lint roller over darks, and favor clean, solid colors.
Teeth & lips
A quick check before we start: nothing from lunch, lips not dry. Small thing, but it’s the kind of detail you notice later if no one caught it.
How we work the details with you
You don’t have to get all of this perfect on your own. That’s what we’re there for. We shoot against clean gray, white, or black backgrounds, and we check the images with you as we go, so nothing is a surprise at the end. When something’s off, like a collar, a stray hair, or your posture, we’ll tell you and reset. By the time we choose your favorites together, the details are already handled, and anything left over we take care of in retouching.
And the files are yours. You leave with every high-resolution image from the session and full ownership, ready for print, web, and LinkedIn.
